Remains Of Two Murder Victims In Nash County Has Deputies Seeking Answers
A mystery in Nash County has investigators searching for answers.
The chance passage of a couple of hunters in a very remote part of that county lead to the discovery of two murder victims.
The remains were found several hundred yards off Quarter Road, which is the rural dirt road that cuts through wooded areas and fields just north of Red Oak.
“You want to solve it as quick as you can because the longer you wait the worse it is and we’re already behind because the bodies have been here 3 months or so,” explained Nash County Sheriff Dick Jenkins.
The hunters made the discovery late Tuesday afternoon and called authorities.
“When we got here we looked and saw what appeared to be two separate sets of skeletal remains,” said the sheriff.
But because it was so late in the day, deputies secured the crime scene, and returned Wednesday morning to start their investigation
Exposed to wildlife and the elements for most of the summer, the remains offered investigators few obvious clues.
“Hopefully we can determine if it’s male, female, black, white or Hispanic," said Sheriff Jenkins. “At this time we don’t know; we just have no clue.”
The spot where the bodies were found lies off a road so remote even locals say it’s seldom used by anybody.
“It’s hidden out of the way,'’ said area resident Brian Winstead. “I own property near this road and I hardly ever come out here myself; very rarely do I even travel it.”
The remoteness of the site offers investigators some insight into the killer.
“My felling is whoever put them here was familiar with this area; had to be,” stated Sheriff Jenkins.
In recent months a task force has been probing the serial killings of women from the Rocky Mount area.
Sheriff Jenkins said, “We are almost positive that it’s not connected with that at all.
When asked what lead him to that conclusion, the sheriff said simply, “I’d rather not tell you that right now.”
Forensic archaeologists joined investigators for most of the day Wednesday at the crime scene as investigators tried to see if there was any connections elsewhere.
“We did contact all the surrounding counties to see if anything was in any way associated with they have and what we have here and right now we don’t have any of that,” explained Sheriff Jenkins.
The remains from Nash County were shipped to the office of the medical examiner in Chapel Hill in the hopes officials there can determine the cause of death.
Crabtree Study Looks To Ease Congestion
Raleigh officials hope a plan to improve traffic in the Crabtree Valley area will help relieve congestion in the coming years.
City Council members received the report by a consultant Tuesday and will give the public 30 days to comment on the plan.
The long-range plan looks at transportation improvements as well as pedestrian and bicycle improvements.
Raleigh Transportation Services Manager Eric Lamb said Glenwood Avenue in front of the Crabtree Valley Mall is basically stretched to the limit.
"It's already ten lanes in certain sections, so there's really not a lot more space physically that we can encroach on to get more lane capacity," he said.
Lamb said that means other nearby roads could be expanded, including Crabtree Valley Avenue that runs behind the mall. One idea calls for extending that road and connecting it to the Beltline.
"The Beltline access from Glenwood Avenue is sometimes challenging with the traffic," said Rob Ambersley, General Manager of Homewood Suites by Hilton at Raleigh/Crabtree Valley. "So future improvements to that I think could only help the mall and hotels and restaurants that are right here in the area."
Another idea involves building a traffic bridge to bring some vehicles from Glenwood Avenue over Creedmoor Road.
Lamb said while these improvements are expensive, the City would look to build one project at a time.
"We could take on one project in the $10 to $15 million range depending on what our options are in regards to funding," he said.

Water Main Leak Leaves 70 Without Water
A water main leak in Cary has left nearly 70 homes without water.
The leak was reported at the intersection of Cary Parkway and Waldo Rood Boulevard. As a result, both left turn lanes on Cary Parkway at Waldo Rood Boulevard and Bebington Drive are closed.
Drivers on Cary Parkway heading toward High House Rd. may only use the far right lane. Drivers on Cary Parkway heading toward Old Apex Road may use both lanes, and drivers on Waldo Rood Blvd approaching Cary Parkway can only turn right onto Cary Parkway.
The cause of the leak has not been determined and crews are working to repair the leak overnight. The regular traffic pattern and water services are anticipated to be restored for the morning commute.
Businesses and residents affected by the water repair have been contacted by the Town of Cary.
NC Lottery Raffle Drawing Delayed To Boost Sales
A raffle drawing by the North Carolina lottery has been extended by 12 days so more tickets can be sold.
The North Carolina Education Lottery had planned to pick three million-dollar winners Wednesday night. Now the "Cash Splash Millionaire Raffle" is set for Sept. 20.
More than 202,000 tickets had been sold as of Wednesday. No more than 500,000 tickets will be sold.
Acting lottery director Alice Garland said slower-than-expected sales this summer contributed to the extension. Garland said the drawing won't be delayed further.
The lottery will give out 598 other prizes from $500 to $50,000.

Ice Cream Welcomes Lynn Road Families
What does ice cream....sunny day...a playground...and 100 laughing children have in common? It is the annual Lynn Road Welcome to School Ice Cream Social. Each year the Lynn Road PTA, Staff and parents welcome the new families to Lynn Road with an Ice Cream social at the Williams Park, which is located adjacent to the Lynn Road Elementary school campus. This year, over 200 parents and children attended this back to school event that allowed for the children to get to know some classmates, parents to get to know other parents and teachers to be on hand to answer the all important questions that parents have when starting a new school year. Suzy Lamb, Lynn Road PTA president states, "We started this event a few years ago to help parents and children acclimate to being at a new school. It is scary for everyone to take that big, important step to Kindergarten or to transfer to a new school and it really helps to ease the anxiety for the parents and children to have some familiar faces when they step through the doors on the first day. By making friends before school starts, it gives the children a friend to seek out on the playground that first day and by becoming familiar with the teachers and staff before hands-helps parents be more at ease in handing off their children." The staff feels that this event is a great way to make the families feel welcome and to become a part of the Lynn Road Community.

deltatre Leverages Inlet's Spinnaker for Broadcast-Quality Live Sports Streaming
Sports Media Services Provider Leverages Spinnaker to Expand Live Streaming Offerings to Premier Sports Business Companies
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA—SEPTEMBER 08, 2010—Inlet Technologies, the leader in innovative solutions for digital media preparation, announced today that deltatre, a world-leading sports media services company headquartered in Torino, Italy, is using its SpinnakerTM family of encoding solutions to generate broadcast-quality streaming outputs of some of the most prominent and high-profile events in the sports world.
deltatre works with global television broadcasters and sports federations in the areas of web, results, graphics and video. The company's initial experience with Inlet's Spinnaker was for the highly-successful online broadcast of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games. On the heels of this experience, deltatre decided to replace legacy encoders with Spinnakers for use with world-leading sports properties starting in June 2010.
"At deltatre we aim to provide our customers with the highest possible quality of products and services. To do that, we invest heavily in the development of our own solutions, and seek out the leading specialists when we need to bring in third parties. Inlet is indeed a leading specialist in its field with terrific products that really get the job done." stated Ciaran Quinn, Director, deltatre. "Inlet Technologies is a great partner for us as we share the same values of excellence, innovation and quality of experience."
In addition to supporting adaptive bitrate (ABR) capabilities (i.e., Microsoft Smooth and Adobe Dynamic), Spinnaker has enabled deltatre to deliver a true broadcast experience for viewers on the web or any mobile device, all from a single Spinnaker appliance. Also of great importance to deltatre, Spinnaker easily integrated into the company's existing content management system and infrastructure.
With the immense growth of the consumption of sports-based content through the web and mobile media, content owners have an unparalleled opportunity to provide global viewers with rich, highly-interactive offerings. However, along with this increased access come the complexities of managing large volumes of data, media preparation, multiple formats and delivery mechanisms, as well as digital rights management (DRM) issues.
"Inlet Technologies and deltatre have the expertise to turn these potential technical and marketing challenges into monetization opportunities for their clients," said Michael Barros, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Inlet Technologies. "We're enabling content owners to bring an unprecedented live sports experience to fans around the world while also recognizing revenue from live streams."
Today's release follows on the heels of recent announcements from Inlet showcasing other global broadcasters and sports content owners turning to the company to create broadcast-quality live and on-demand online video experiences. Inlet recently announced that British broadcaster BBC is using Spinnaker to power its simulcast expansion plans as well as live sporting events, including the recent FIFA World Cup 2010, Wimbledon, and F1 Grand Prix. Australia's ABC News 24 digital news service relies on Spinnaker for online and mobile live streaming. Other notable broadcast and sports-related customers include NBC/Universal Sports, Vancouver Winter Games, France Télévisions, ITV (UK), M6 (France), RAI (Italy), and TV 2 (Norway).

Inlet Technologies Showcases Ad Insertion
and Advanced ABR Support at IBC 2010
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA—SEPTEMBER 8, 2010 - Inlet Technologies, the leader in innovative solutions for digital media preparation, today announced that they will be exhibiting at the upcoming IBC conference taking place September 10-14 in Amsterdam. The company will demonstrate the latest enhancements to its SpinnakerTM line of award-winning streaming appliances and Armada automated workflow management system, as well as its automated ad insertion solution and advanced support for adaptive bitrate streaming and digital rights management (DRM).
Inlet will be exhibiting at IBC's Connected World area, stand #602.
Enabling Automated Ad Insertion
Inlet will demonstrate its proven, built-in support for fully-automated ad insertion for live streaming, enabling TV Everywhere providers and content owners to monetize new screens. Inlet's Spinnaker can detect and leverage broadcast cue messages to automate the insertion of video-based ads into live video streams for Flash, Silverlight or iDevices. For those who do not use broadcast cue messages, and for more unpredictable live events, Inlet also supports manual video review and ad insertion. Regional ad insertion, key to networks and their local affiliates, is also enabled with this technology.
Adaptive Bitrate and Product Advancements
As the first provider to offer full support for adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) in early 2009, Inlet continues to extend its leadership with new capabilities and by setting new industry standards.
As a software-enabled streaming solution, Spinnaker reduces the complexity and cost of media preparation in the race to TV Everywhere and helps customers protect their investment by streamlining the process. Spinnaker allows customers to perform a single encode (or multiple encodes in the case of an adaptive bitrate experience) and then simultaneously wrap that encoded stream into multiple formats, such as Smooth, Flash and iPhone, for delivery to a multitude of devices, all out of one Spinnaker.
During IBC, Inlet will be showcasing the latest updates to Spinnaker, including closed captioning, sub-titling and multi-language support, as well as support for PlayReady DRM, local and managed archiving, multi-camera support, and low latency. New H.264 quality options have also been added, providing even greater flexibility for customers who wish to tailor video output quality. Spinnaker's full support for Microsoft IIS Smooth Streaming, Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming and HTTP Adaptive Streaming to Apple's iPhone® and iPad® will also be on display.
Advanced support for adaptive bitrate streaming will also be on display with Inlet's Armada automated workflow management system and Fathom® high-performance advanced encoding platform, the first packaged offerings to support large-volume on-demand streaming of content for iPhone and iPad devices. In addition, partner TwoFour Digital will be in Inlet's booth, demonstrating Armada as the transcoding engine for MEDIAFREEDOM 3, the latest version of TwoFour's leading media asset management software. By combining Armada and MEDIAFREEDOM, content providers can now meet stringent DRM requirements with end-to-end content encryption and authentication control for the delivery of content to any device.
"As a result of Inlet's technical leadership, we are the first to help our customers reach new screens and devices. Inlet continues to deliver innovative technologies that address key issues for our customers, such as density, scalability, monetization, rights management, security, and accessibility," commented Don Bossi, CEO, Inlet Technologies. "By teaming with industry leaders like Twofour Digital and by accelerating the entire digital media ecosystem, we are redefining the video experience and accelerating our customers' plans to monetize online content."
